Shadyside Sits About 1.5 Miles From Oakland, and It Shows in Your Commute
How far is Shadyside from Pitt? The University of Pittsburgh puts Shadyside about 1.5 miles northeast of Oakland. That makes the Shadyside to Oakland commute one of the easiest in the city.
From Industry Pittsburgh at 5819 Centre Avenue, where Shadyside meets East Liberty, the numbers look like this. Pitt and Carnegie Mellon are about 10 minutes away by car. UPMC Shadyside is under a mile. Bakery Square is within walking distance.
The bus takes longer, but it’s direct and you skip the parking hunt. Below is the commute to each place by car, bus, shuttle, and bike, plus what changed for Oakland riders in 2026.

Getting to Pitt and Central Oakland
The P3 East Busway-Oakland is the quickest bus for most Pitt commuters. Board at Negley Station, on Negley Avenue just south of Centre Avenue. The bus runs on the busway, exits at the Neville Street ramp, and serves Fifth Avenue at Craig Street and Atwood Street in Oakland.
Scheduled trips between Atwood Street and Negley Station run a little over 20 minutes. The P3 runs weekdays only, from about 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Buses come about every 15 minutes at peak times and every 25 to 30 minutes off-peak. You can check the full P3 timetable from Pittsburgh Regional Transit before your first trip.
On weekends, you’ll need another route. Pitt’s own relocation guide lists the 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, 54, P3, and 75 as routes from Shadyside to campus, with bus rides of about 20 to 30 minutes.
Cost depends on who you are. Pitt students, faculty, and staff ride free through the university’s U-Pass agreement, and everyone else pays a base fare of $2.75. Pitt affiliates can also ride CMU’s shuttles between North Oakland and Shadyside at no charge, thanks to a shared agreement between the schools.
Biking is an option too, and the ride is mostly flat. Riders on BikePGH’s forum often skip busy Fifth Avenue and take Ellsworth Avenue to Neville Street, then Bayard Street into campus.
Getting to Carnegie Mellon
CMU is about a 10-minute drive from Industry Pittsburgh. On the bus, the P3 stops at Fifth Avenue and Craig Street, a short walk from CMU’s main campus on Forbes Avenue.
CMU also runs its own shuttles from 7 a.m. to 10:45 p.m., mostly through North Oakland and Shadyside. Check the stop map before you count on one near Centre Avenue.
One change matters for CMU riders. Since April 6, 2026, CMU students, faculty, and staff ride PRT buses free through the Ready2Ride mobile app instead of tapping a CMU ID.
Getting to UPMC Shadyside and the Oakland Hospitals
UPMC Shadyside, at 5230 Centre Avenue, is less than a mile from Industry Pittsburgh. That’s typically under 10 minutes by car, and it’s easy to walk or bike. It’s a straight line down the same avenue.
The Oakland hospitals, including UPMC Presbyterian on Lothrop Street and Magee-Womens on Halket Street, follow the same routes as the Pitt commute. Outbound P3 buses now stop on Forbes Avenue near Halket Street, which helps on the way home from Magee.
Shift work is where planning matters most. The P3 doesn’t run past about 9 p.m. or on weekends, so night and weekend shifts usually mean a car or a 71-series bus. Our guide to housing for medical professionals in Pittsburgh covers what residents and travel nurses look for in a home near the hospitals.

Getting to Bakery Square
Bakery Square is within walking distance of Industry Pittsburgh, so this commute rarely needs a car. The development is home to offices including Google’s Pittsburgh team.
If you’re a CMU student or employee with work at Bakery Square, CMU runs a weekday shuttle between campus and Bakery Square. It travels along Fifth Avenue and Penn Avenue.
What Changed for Oakland Commutes in 2026
The biggest change is on Fifth Avenue. On January 4, 2026, PRT permanently retired the counterflow bus lane on Fifth Avenue in Oakland. That lane had been in service for more than 45 years.
According to PRT, nine routes now run outbound on Forbes Avenue instead, including the 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, and P3. They serve existing Forbes stops, and 17 outbound Fifth Avenue stops were removed. For now, those buses share lanes with regular traffic, so evening trips home can run slower.
The long-term plan is better. PRT’s University Line project will add dedicated bus lanes outbound on Forbes and inbound on Fifth, plus a protected bike lane on Fifth Avenue. It’s expected to be finished in 2027.
Two other updates are worth knowing:
Fares and service are stable for now. In September 2025, PRT avoided a proposed 35% service cut and 9% fare increase for two years.
Fare cards are changing. PRT is moving riders from ConnectCard to a new ReadyFare card during 2026, and the Ready2Ride app already works.
Why Industry Pittsburgh Shortens the Commute
A short commute starts with where you live. Industry Pittsburgh sits on Centre Avenue at the edge of Shadyside and East Liberty, with UPMC Shadyside down the street and Negley Station a short walk away.
Daily errands don’t add another trip either. Whole Foods on Penn Avenue and Trader Joe’s nearby are both part of the neighborhood. Oyoshi is opening on the ground floor. The Industry Pittsburgh location guide maps the grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, and universities around the building.
